While recording CDs, the hard disk has to
deliver a constant stream of data. If interrupted for a few seconds, you will get a
"buffer underrun" and your CD-recordabale gets unusable
You can avoid this with optimal configuration. Three
easy steps are enough for Windows 95. Other tips will
help with most operating systems.

Don't forget to clean.
As suggested by the HP Hotline, I used a cleaning CD. Not only went the dust
away, but also the problem which transformed many, many CD-Rs to waste.
Update
Better use a wet cleaning system (available for example at Jumbo).
Internal recorder can get really hot.
The german computer magazine c't reports of
heat problems with cheap internal cd recorders. Their optical device is affected by the
heat, what leads to errors. First sporadic and after a couple of CDs in a row, these
errors can finally make it impossible to burn a CD. I recommend buying an external CD
recorder
